A cartridge-operated driving tool for firing bolts, nails or the like into workpieces comprises a barrel 6 slidably mounted in a housing 1 and having a chamber 5 for a cartridge 4, and a guide 15 slidably mounted in the barrel. Stops 16 mounted in apertures in the barrel are urged by a spring ring 18 into slots 20 in the guide to limit movement of the guide. Surfaces 21 (see Fig. 4) rising out of the slots 20 are provided so that when the stops are positioned outside the housing the guide will be released upon rotation and longitudinal sliding. A catch 26 normally extending via a slot 31 into the path of piston 14 has shoulders 32 which coact with surfaces 33 on the barrel so that when the barrel is forced into the housing, upon contacting a workpiece against bias of spring 10 the catch is pushed out of the piston's path. Rearward movement of the barrel forces breech block 9 to a position in which a striker pin release catch 11 is in the path of movement of a trigger 12. To permit reloading and ejection of the cartridge, slidable cover 38 is moved to open opening 3 and the guide and barrel are pulled outwardly of the housing during which movement the piston is arrested by the catch 26 and continued movement of the barrel causes a piston tongue (not shown) to eject the spent cartridge. The guide 15 includes a magnet 24 for holding a fastener, and a buffer ring 22 against which the piston is forced if propelled by an excessive charge. An expansion chamber 37 is provided.
