Abstract

764,989. Cartridge operated tools. BOSSONG-WERK GES. Nov. 26, 1954 [Dec. 28, 1953], No. 34385/54. Class 119. In a cartridge operated tool for firing bolts into a solid mass, the barrel 4 Fig. 1 is provided at its rear end with a screwed-on slide piece 3 containing the cartridge chamber 15 and together with a breech locking member 20, is axially displaceable in a tubular casing 2. A firing pin 25 is mounted in an axial bore of the breech locking member 20 and is actuated by a firing pin hammer 35 which, when released by radial displacement from a stop 41, is urged forward by a spring 36. According to the invention an aperture 31 Figs. 1, 2 is provided in the casing 2 adjacent the locking member 20 so that after the latter has been drawn back relative to the barrel, loading of a cartridge can be effected through the aperture 31 and a spent cartridge ejected therethrough. The member 20 is locked to the rear end of the barrel by a bayonet-type catch and can be brought into several positions of adjustment by means of a hand lever 22 secured thereto and guided in a Z-shaped slot 23 in the casing 2. The locking member 20 is urged forward by a spring 30. The hammer 35 is mounted with play for radial movement in the stock 37 and an operating handle 42 is adapted to be raised to release the hammer from the stop 41. The barrel 4 has a tubular jacket 5 forming a gas expansion chamber 8, and is normally maintained in a position of equilibrium resulting from the action of springs 10, 11 located respectively between the rear end of the barrel and an end piece 1 of the casing 2 and between the end piece 1 and a shatter guard 12 slidably mounted on the barrel but urged by the spring 11 against an annular stop 13 on the barrel. The shatter guard 12 is carried by a sleeve 14 slidable on the barrel. Adjacent the cartridge chamber 15 is an extractor 17 provided with a claw 16 and guided in axially displaceable fashion in a keyway in the slide piece 3. On forward movement of the barrel the front end of the extractor strikes against a flange 18 on the end piece 1 and remains behind with respect to the barrel, thus ejecting the cartridge. A return spring 18<SP>1</SP> arranged between the slide piece 3 and the extractor 17 brings the latter back to its initial position when the barrel has returned to its equilibrium position. To load the tool, the locking member 20 is brought to the position shown in Fig. 1 by means of the hand lever 22 being moved into the position A, Fig. 4. The aperture 31 is thereby opened and a cartridge inserted therethrough into the chamber 15, whereupon after a bolt has been inserted in the barrel, the lever 22 is moved to position B in which the end face of the locking member 20 is applied against the rear of the slide piece 3 but is not locked thereto. The shatter guard 12 is then pressed against the solid mass and the barrel 4 and locking member 20 moved back with respect to the casing 2 so that the hand lever 22 reaches position A<SP>1</SP>. In this position the firing pin 25 is not yet within range of the forward position of the hammer 35 which is limited by a collar 35<SP>1</SP> engaging against a face 32<SP>1</SP> on a guide piece 32. The locking member 20 is then turned through 90‹ with respect to the barrel to bring the hand lever 22 to position C and to lock the member 20 to the slide piece 3. In this position the barrel and locking member can be brought to their rearmost position corresponding to D in Fig. 4, necessary for firing the shot. Ejection of the spent cartridge takes place as soon as the lever 22 is moved to position A to permit the barrel to move forward under the action of spring 11. The displacement distances a and b of the barrel and s of the sleeve 14 are such that if the tool is tilted relative to the surface 46 as shown in Fig. 1, the tool cannot be fired.
