A pneumatically-actuated nailing tool 11 comprises a driver 40 connected to a piston 22 which is reciprocable in a cylinder 20, a magazine 52 for holding nails 122 and a latch mechanism 144 adapted to feed the nails one at a time to a driver passage 50. The latch mechanism 144 includes a latch 170 pivotally mounted in a plunger 167 which is slidable in a cylinder 150 formed in the nose casting 48 of the tool. The plunger is formed with a cam surface 176 adapted to engage a corresponding surface 178 on a follower 146 loaded by a spring 148. In operation, with the tool in the position shown, compressed air in a reservoir 74 acts via a passage 94 on a piston 82 of a spool valve 80 so as to exhaust the air above the driving piston 22 via a passage 108. Upon depressing a trigger 98, air in a chamber 84 is exhausted and thereby allows a closure member 92 on the spool valve to open a port 78 so that the air can act on the driving piston 22. As the first nail in the magazine is driven therefrom, the head of nail abuts the latch 170 thereby rotating the plunger 167 so that the operative portion of the latch is moved out of alignment with the remaining nails (Fig. 5), the spring 148 being loaded via the interengaging cam surfaces 176, 178. At the end of the stroke of the driving piston air is fed, via passages 200, 202, into the cylinder 150 so as to move the plunger rearwardly. Upon release of the trigger the driving piston is returned by air trapped, during the working stroke, in a chamber 28 and the plunger is moved forward by the spring 148 so that the latch moves another nail into the driving channel 50; the nails are prevented from moving rearwardly in the magazine by means of spring-loaded indents (160, Fig. 4).
