Die Erfindung betrifft die Herstellung von Propionsäure aus Propionaldehyd. The invention relates to the production of propionic acid from propionaldehyde.
Oxydiert man z. It is known to oxidize aliphatic aldehydes to carboxylic acids in such a way that they are with an oxygen-containing gas, for example with air or with pure oxygen, and the reaction is carried out at elevated temperature and, if possible, under elevated pressure. Possibly the reaction can be achieved through the use of catalysts, preferably salts of metals changing values, for example of manganese and cobalt, are facilitated. That way you can z. B. propionaldehyde in the presence of manganese naphthenate or cobalt naphthenate to propionic acid are oxidized. If this is done, a high degree of aldehyde conversion can be achieved, but the acid yield, based on the aldehyde converted, does not meet expectations. Oxidized one z. B. Propionaldehyde using manganese naphthenate as a catalyst with pure oxygen and at a temperature of 45 to 60 ° C, a degree of conversion of the aldehyde of at least 95 ° / o can be achieved; but the propionic acid yield is generally only by 80%. This means a substantial loss of propionaldehyde. A method that can reduce this loss is considerably technical Value.
The acid yield can also be caused by undesired metal ions present in the reaction mixture be reduced. For example, iron and / or nickel ions as a result of corrosion of the Material of the conversion apparatus must be present. Metal ions can also be present in the aldehyde be. If z. B. the aldehyde was produced by the so-called oxo process, it can Contains cobalt ions. It is believed that such intentional or as a result of inattention in the Aldehyde or metal ions contained in the oxidation mixture easily favor undesired side reactions, whereby the expected carboxylic acid yield falls. It has now been found that the addition a complexing agent to the oxidation mixture causes an increase in the yield.
Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propionsäure durch Oxydation von Propionaldehyd mit Sauerstoff oder einem sauerstoffhaltigen Gas in Gegenwart von Ionen eines oder mehrerer Schwermetalle wechselnder Wertigkeit im Oxydationsgemisch vorgeschlagen, wobei dem Oxydationsgemisch Komplexbildner in mindestens der zur Komplexbindung mit sämtlichen vorhandenen Verfahren zur Herstellung von PropionsäureAccording to the invention, a process for the preparation of propionic acid by oxidation of propionaldehyde is provided with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of ions of one or more Heavy metals of changing valency in the oxidation mixture proposed, with the oxidation mixture complexing agents in at least the for Complex binding with all existing processes for the production of propionic acid

Schwermetallionen stöchiometrisch notwendigen Menge zugesetzt werden.Heavy metal ions are added stoichiometrically necessary amount.
Such complexing agents are, for example, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, tartaric acid, and dimethylglyoxine or triethanolamine. These are added in an amount which is at least that required for complex formation with all heavy metal ions present stoichiometrically necessary corresponds. For example Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid reacts with most metals in a ratio of 1: 1, regardless of whether it is divalent or trivalent ions, whereby of course the charge of the resulting Complex ion is different. Around the disruptive heavy metal ions as completely as possible to bind complex, however, a substantial excess of the complexing agent is usually added, for example 50 times the theoretical amount. The method of the present invention is both applicable in those cases where a metal salt is used as an oxidation catalyst, as well as in the above-mentioned cases in which a metal salt, for example as a result of corrosion or as a result a metal content of the starting aldehyde, is present. The required amount of complexing agent each refers to the total amount of added or existing heavy metal ions.

Oxidized to propionic acid at a temperature of 60 ° C in the presence of a small amount of cobalt naphthenate, the degree of conversion of propionaldehyde being 98% and the yield of propionic acid based on the converted Aldehyde was 78%. When repeating the reaction in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid a degree of conversion of 98% was also obtained, while the propionic acid yield increased 92% was up.
Gewöhnlich soll der Arbeitsdruck 30 at, vorzugsweise 10 at, nicht überschreiten. The process of the present invention can be carried out at a temperature of 30 to 150 ° C, preferably from 40 to 100 ° C. The pressure used in the procedure may be normal or be elevated.
