Abstract

1,157,559. Portable drills. METABOWERKE KG CLOSS, RAUCH & SCHNIZLER. 17 Nov., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 52429/67. Heading B3C. [Also in Division B4] A rotary-percussive drill comprises a hammer member 3 provided with helical teeth 20 for co-operation with corresponding teeth in a sleeve 21 so as to cause the latter to oscillate upon axial movement of the member 3, a ring 26 secured to the sleeve and provided with saw-shaped teeth 28 adapted to coact with corresponding teeth on a drill sleeve 23, the ring being urged into contact with the sleeve by a spring 27. The hammer member 3 is in the form of a sleeve 13 having a slide 11 moving in a guide-way 12 and reciprocated by means of a motor via a crank-and-gear drive 7, 8, 9, 10. A striker member 14 is provided with a piston 24 slidable in the sleeve 13, air cushions being formed by chambers 15, 16. A drill holder 33 is slidable in sleeve 23 via straight splines 32 and is formed with an anvil end 34. In operation, the drill is pressed against a workpiece thereby moving the anvil end into the range of movement of the striker 14; if rotation only of the drill is required, the pressure on the drill is relaxed. In the event of an overload, the teeth 28 on the ring 26 ride over the corresponding teeth on the sleeve 23 against the action of the spring 27.
