Abstract

1350401 Percussive tools ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 4 May 1971 [5 May 1970] 12862/71 Heading B4C A percussive device includes a tool holder 32 intermittently and unidirectionally rotated and impacted in use by an impacting mechanism 26 reciprocated by a motor 22 via a crank arrangement. Reciprocation of the mechanism 26 effects via meshing helical splines oscillation of a sleeve 90<SP>1</SP> having secured thereto an annulus 144<SP>1</SP> and having mounted thereon Belville washers 150A, 150B and a collar 148<SP>1</SP>. Ratchet teeth on the collar engage with ratchet teeth on a rotatable member 129<SP>1</SP> connected by splines to the tool holder. Rotation of the collar in one direction causes rotation of the member 129<SP>1</SP> and the holder 32, and rotation of the collar in the other direction effects displacement of the sleeve 90<SP>1</SP> against bias of spring 180. If rotation of the holder in the one direction is prevented by jamming of a tool bit, the collar will slip relative to the annulus 144<SP>1</SP>. Rotation of the tool holder may occur on either the impact stroke or the return stroke of mechanism 26, although rotation on the impact stroke is preferred. The mechanism 26 includes a sleeve 104 and a hammer piston 30. Cushioning of the piston is achieved by air trapped in spaces 112, 113 on the piston head 102 passing respectively the rearmost and forwardmost edges of the openings 110. Excessive forward travel of the tool holder is cushioned by a resilient ring 126. Selection of one of two forms of tool bit (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) can without modification of the device condition the latter for rotary/percussion or pure percussion.
