Abstract

1,123,452. Drilling machines. HUYGMETAAL N.V. 4 March, 1966 [5 March, 1965], No. 9603/66. Heading B3C. [Also in Division B4] An electric hammer drill comprises a barrel 2 connected to an electric motor 1 and having therein a hammer 4 reciprocably mounted, against the action of a spring 6, by means of a pair of cam rings 13, 16, the ring 13 being rotated by means of a tool holder 3 connected to the motor via a shaft 8 and the ring 16 being restrained against rotary motion. The hammer 4 is provided with arms 17 having rollers 21 adapted to run in grooves 5 formed in the barrel 2, the outer surface of the hammer being polygonally -shaped and arranged to engage with a correspondingly-shaped inner surface of the cam ring 16. In operation, upon rotation of the shaft 8 the tool holder is rotated together with the cam 13, thereby causing the hammer to rise and then drop under the action of the spring 6 so as to strike an anvil portion 23 of the tool holder. If a drill bit jams, the machine is raised so that a polygonally-shaped driving connection 12 engaged with the cam 13 is disconnected, thereby permitting .rotary movement only of the bit.
