662,409. Percussive drills. SAN ANTONIO, E. C. Nov. 4, 1949 [Nov. 16, 1948; April 21, 1949], Nos. 28329/49 and 28330/49. Class 124 In a percussive drill the driving mechanism comprises a rotatably driven wheel, a reciprocating striker urged towards a tool by a spring, and a connecting rod having one end connected to the striker and the other slidably and pivotally engaging an arcuate slot in the wheel so that it is carried round with the wheel to a dead centre when the connecting rod may move ahead of the wheel and allow the striker to deliver a blow to the tool or to an anvil. As shown, a striker 8, moving in a bore 1<SP>11</SP>, has pivotally connected to it at 12 a connecting rod 6 the other end of which has a pin engaging in an arcuate slot 14 in a wheel 4 which meshes with a driven bevel wheel 9. A spring 13 urges the striker towards an anvil 18 on which it strikes blows when the wheel reaches such position that the connecting rod may move ahead of it. A rubber buffer 22 may cushion idle blows. The spring 13 may be replaced by two springs anchored at one end to the body of the drill and at the other to the striker, one spring being on either side of the striker; in this embodiment the striker is floating and no guide is required, Fig. 4 (not shown). The arcuate slot may have various shapes, some of which are shown in Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 11.
