Abstract

Percussive hand tools.-In self-contained portable hammer drill or like percussive tool a heavy piston b is maintained in reciprocation between air cushions in chambers a<1>, a<3>, with or without springs, by supplying heat to the chambers a<1> in the manner of an internal combustion engine. Fuel under pressure is supplied by a pipe h past a loaded valve e', Fig. 4, which is operated bv the vibration of the tool, and ignites under pressure in the chamber a<1>, provided with air inlet' and exhaust ports c, d, the air being compressed in the intermediate chamber a<2> of the cylinder and passed to a reservoir c'. A detonator such as fulminate of mercury may be used at starting, or merely dropping the tool on its end is stated to suffice to set the piston in motion. The tool is struck by, or is attached to, either the piston or the tool cylinder. The reservoir c may be omitted and air compressed by the piston may be used to clear out the bore hole. The handle is provided with a spring grip y<2> and a fuel-control lever y may be mounted thereon. Fig. 5 shows a modified arrangement of the fuel valve e<1>, which is here mounted on a reservoir m provided with an air pump n having inlet and discharge valves n<4> in the hand-operated plunger n<1>.
