Abstract
520,341. Percussive drills. COLLINS, C. W., and HENDERSON, W. M. Oct. 18, 1938, Nos. 30098/38 and 23167/39. [Class 124] In a percussive drill, air, gas, or liquid is supplied by. a pipe 19 and passes through a non-return inlet valve 12 and a port 14, which is uncovered when the power-driven reciprocating hammer 2 commences its return stroke, into a pump chamber formed between the working end face 7 of the hammer and the opposed working end face 8 of the tool holder 4, and is compressed at each working stroke of the hammer and ejected through a bore 11 in the tool holder, past a non-return discharge valve 13, and through the bore 9 of the tool 10. The hammer 2 may be driven by an internal combustion engine 1 in opposition to springs 3, and the hammer and tool holder may be fitted with piston rings 15, 16. Compressed air may be supplied to the pipe 19 by means of an air pump 17, 18 driven by means of a spring-controlled lever 20 rocked by a cam 21 on a shaft 22 driven from the engine 1. The tool holder may be rotated step-wise by means of a spur wheel 23 in sliding mesh with a pinion 24 which is driven through a variable ratchet wheel and pawl mechanism 25 and bevel gearing 26 from the lever 20.
