Abstract
782,029. Percussive drills. BERGMAN, G. A. April 29, 1955 [May 4, 1954; May 4, 1954], No. 12534/55. Class 124. An internal combustion engine driven percussive drill having a free striking piston in the form of a differential piston the large portion of which, operating in a cylinder adjacent the engine cylinder, forms an air compressor in which the inlet and outlet valves are operable by air flow and are arranged in passages extending to and from the end of the air compressor cylinder adjacent the engine cylinder, the passages being situated diametrically opposite each other. As shown, a free striking piston has its small diameter 10 in the engine cylinder and its large diameter 14 in a compressor cylinder 16, an extension 48 extending downwardly through a guide 62 to strike a tool 70. Atmospheric air from a pipe 40 enters a space 22 above the piston 14 through a non- return valve 24, which may be a flap-valve, Fig. 2 (not shown) or a free disc, Fig. 3 (not shown), on the downward movement of the piston, and is discharged through a similar valve 26, a passage 42, a chamber 46, a passage 60, past the piston extension 48 to a bore 68 in the tool, on the return stroke. When the tool is used as a hammer, the valve 26 may discharge to atmosphere through an adjustable non-return valve, Fig. 4 (not shown).
