Abstract

615,002. Combustion chambers. MANTELL, L., and BURTON, C. E. Sept. 24, 1946, No. 28565. [Class 7 (ii)] An internal combustion engine of sparkignited type in which the piston crown 3 closely approaches part of the cylinder head surface 4 has one or more grooves 6 in the piston crown or cylinder head arranged so that as the piston approaches top dead centre part of the compressed mixture is forced in one or more concentrated streams directly towards the ignition point 5. In Fig. 4 the engine has overhead valves 2 and the piston is of penthouse or conical shape, the groove being partly in the cylinder head and partly in the piston. In another modification, Fig. 3, a side valve engine has a flat-topped piston and the plane 9 of the upper surface of the wedge-shaped groove 6 passes through or above the ignition point 5.
