[Class 28 (i).] In a machine for cooking waffles and the like, the pairs of cooking irons are hinged and locked together by means incorporating springs which permit slight separation of the irons for the escape of steam, and a slight separation is, in addition, positively effected by the usual roller 9 of the upper iron passing over an undulating cam. The space between the irons is normally closed by guard elements 45 secured to one of the irons. The hinge 3 is mounted on a sliding spring-returned rod 42, and the rotary lock 7 is slidable in a casing containing a spring 6 which tends to move the lock downwardly. It is desirable that, immediately after charging the irons with batter and closing them, the irons should be opened slightly for venting the steam. It is therefore necessary to raise the lock positively in order that it may be turned into the locked position. This is effected by a depending portion 15 of the lock engaging a recess in the top of a block 14 which is slid, by the onward movement of the portion 15 with the irons, between guides 16, 17, the upper faces of which are formed as cams. The cam action first raises the lock to permit it to be turned by the engagement of the star wheel 26 with a stationary stop 24, and then lowers the block 14 away from the portion 15 to permit the springs 19 to return the block to engage the locking-means of the next pair of irons. A resilient device 28 prevents the top irons from being raised too far and fouling the lock 7 as it is rotated. A modified form of lockraising block is used for machines where the baking-irons travel vertically at the locking- position. The undulating cam for positively raising the upper iron is secured adjustably at one side of a stationary rail, the adjustment and fixing being effected by eccentric bolts and clamping-screws.
