Stays.-Hinged members such as the lids or covers of cabinets, boxes, desks, &c. are held in an open position by a slotted stay-bar 2 engaging projections 12 on a rotatable disc 15 mounted on the box or like member, as shown in Fig. 2, pins 14 being provided on the disc for engaging with one or more teeth 5 on the stay, whereby the lid may be closed after a series of short up-and-down movements. To release the lid for closing, it is first opened sufficiently to bring one of the pins 14 on the back of the disc into engagement with a notch 5. This rotates the disc through and positions the disc, as shown in Fig. 3, so that a closing movement of the lid brings another pin on the disc into engagement with a notch 6, whereby the disc is moved round with the projection 12 in alignment with the slot 3 of the stay-bar. To position the parts to hold the lid cpen, the lid is raised so that a pin 14 engages the notch 5 to rock the disc into an inclined position; by then slightly closing the lid, the notch 6 engages another pin and moves the disc into the position shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, a spring member is used instead of the notch 6.
