Abstract
331,753. Greenman, H. Sept. 7, 1929. Stays.-A stay 1 for hinged lids is pivoted to a bracket 3 at one end and carries a rotating member 5 at the end working in conjunction with a slot 9 of uniform width in a plate 7 secured to the body of the article. When the lid is opened the hub 6 of the member 5 rides along the slot 9 until a corner of the member 5 contacts with a stop 11; this causes a partial rotation of the member so that a slight lowering of the lid causes the stay to become locked by engagement of an opposite corner with the stop 10. To close the lid it is moved upwards till a corner of the member 5 engages the stop 11, causing the member to be partly rotated so that the opposite corner points away from the stop 10. The closing of the lid completes a halfrotation of the member 5 which slides along the plate 7 under the stop 10. In a modification, the member 5 is pivoted on the plate 7 and a slot 14 is formed in the stay 1. Fig. 3 shows the position for sustaining the lid. To close the lid the lid is moved upwards till the projection 11 partly turns the member 5 as before, so that it can move under the stop 10 and permit the end of the stay to clear the shoulder 13.
