Abstract

Stays.-A lid 4 or other hinged article when raised is held automatically in the open position by means of a rotatable member 6 on the end of the stay 1, the member 6 being of greater length than breadth and slidable in a horizontal slot 9 of a bracket member 8 secured to the side of the box 5. the slot 9 having an enlarged part 11 and a projection 13 whereby the member 6 is rotated as the lid is raised and turned into a position to hold the lid open. As the lid is being opened the catch member 6 slides lengthwise in the narrow part of the slot 9 until, when it rises in the enlarged part 11 of the slot, it engages the projection 13; this stops the opening movement of the lid, and on lowering the lid the member 6 is turned into a vertical position so as to engage the part 10 of the slot and hold the lid .open, as shown. To close the lid it is lifted to engage the projection 13 and thereby tilt the member 6, as shown in dotted lines. On now lowering the lid the member 6 is rotated to lie on its side, which enables it to pass into the part 9 of the slot for the closure of the lid. The projection 13 may be formed on the lower part of the enlarged part of the slot.
