Description

H. w. SATTLER.
COVER SUPPORT. APPLICATION FILE D JAN- 9. 1919.
, Patented Apr. 8,1919.
nrrnn s'raras PATENT ornron- HENRY'W. SATTLER OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOBSON & MOTZER C0., or MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, A ALFRED MQ'IZER.
FIRM COMPOSED OF HARRY G. HOBSONAND COVER-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed January 9, 1919. SeriaI I To. $0,397.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. SATTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State ofConnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in CoverSupports; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken perspective view illustrating a case and cover, the cover being supported in the open position.
Fig. 2 a broken inside view of the case and cover with the cover in the closed position.
Fig. 3 a broken side view of my cover support shown in the position ready for final closing.
Fig. 4 a top or plan view of the supporting flange.
This invention relates to an improvement in cover supports particularly adapted for use in connection with cabinets, such as phonograph cabinets or covered boxes for various purposes. It is'frequently desirable to support the cover in the open position and it is also desirable to close the cover with one hand without releasing some locking mechanism with the other hand.
The object of this invention is to provide simple means whereby this may be accomplished, and the invention consists in a cover support having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a plate 5 formed with a flange 6, this plate being adapted to be secured to the inner side wall 7 of a box or cabinet. In the flange is a longitudinal slot 8 narrower at its inner end which is crossed by a bar 9. At the outer end of the slot is a notch 1.0 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Pivotally connected with the cover 11 through a plate 12 is a brace 13 which is adapted to travel in the slot 8 and enter the contracted inner end 9 thereof, being formed in its rear edge with a notch 14L forming a hook which will engage with the bar 9 so as to support the cover in the open position. Parallel with the forward edge is a slit 15 which extends outward through the forward edge of the brace 13 so as to form a spring arm 16 the lower end 17 of which is curved outward to form a finger for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. In the closed position the parts are as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawin s, the brace being so positioned that when t e cover is in the closed position it hangs vertically through the slot 8 in the flange 6.
-. As the cover is raised the brace rides against the bar 9 until the notch 14 engages with that bar and so supports the cover as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. .To close the cover, the cover is moved backward slightly so as to draw the brace upward through the slot, the spring finger 16 yielding to permit such movement, and the brace is prevented from .being drawn entirely through the slot by means of a stop pin 18. When the brace is drawn outward to the limit of its movement, the arm 16 springs outward so that the finger 17 bears upon the upper surface of the flange 6. If the cover is then closed, the finger 17 will ride upon the upper surface of the flange 6 until that finger reaches the notch 10 throughwhich it will pass so that the cover can be completely closed. I thus accomplish with very simple mechanism the desired result of being able to firmly support a cover in open position and able to close that cover with one hand.
I claim 1. A cover support comprising a horizontally arranged flange, a longitudinal slot in said flange contracted at its rear end and formed with a transverse bar, a notch opening into the forward end of said slot, a brace extending through said slot and formed in its rear edge with a notch adapted to engage with said bar, said brace also formed with a spring arm terminating in an outwardly projecting finger adapted to ride upon the upper surface of said flange and pass through the notch therein.
2. The combination with a casing, of a plate secured thereto, said plate formed with an inwardly projecting horizontally arranged flange, said flange formed in its upper face with a longitudinal slot contractbrace formed inits rear edfe with a notch specification in the presence of two subscribaldapted tofenga'ge With sai bar, salild brace ing Witnesses.
s otted to orm a spring arm whic termii nates in an outwardly projecting finger, and v HENRY T T E a stop to limit the upward movement of said Witnesses: f

In testimony whereof, I have signed this JOHN P. NEWMAN.
