Description

M. HABIF CONTAINER April 24, 1945.
Filed May 5, 1945 F w E mam M H mm. A U mm WITNESS Patented Apr. 24, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT yOFF-IGE CONTAINER Maurice Ha'bif, Habana, Cuba Application May 5, 1943, Serial No. 485,708 (01.206-44) a 2 Claims.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in containers, and more particularly to a container'designed for use in connection with perfume bottles and various other small articles. i
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved container or box which is so constructed that when the cover or lid thereof is opened, one end of the'article contained therein will be raised from the bottomof the container to a position where it may be readily grasped by the user.
Other objects of the invention as well as the novel construction, combination and arrangement of the parts will appear from a perusal of the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closed container embodyin'g theinvention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the box of Fig. 1 showing a perfume bottle contained therein; Fig. 3 is a, view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the lid of the box in opened position and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawing, the reference character A designates the bottom of the box or container which is provided along its front and side edges with walls B, C and D. The rear of the container is left open, there being no wall along the rear edge of the bottom A connecting the rear ends of the side walls C and D. In the embodiment illustrated, the height of the walls B, C and D are about one-half the height of the box on the outer side thereof.
The cover or lid of the box or container includes a top panel or wall E having connected to its front and side edges, a front wall F and side walls G and H. The walls F, G and H, which are about one-half the height of the box on the outer side thereof are constructed to seat on the walls B, C and D, respectively, when the container is closed, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The cover is also provided with a rear wall I which is connected at its ends to the rear ends of side walls G and H and which is of sufficient height to depend down into and to close the space at the rear of the container between the rear ends of the side walls C and D when the lid of the container is closed as is shown in Figs, 1 and 2 of the drawing. The cover or lid is pivotally connected to the container'by hinge pins J, J which project inwardly in opposed relation from the upper portions of the rear ends of the side walls C and D and extend into the side edges of the depending portion of rear wall I at points which permit of the ready opening and closing of the lid and 'yetenable themajor part'of the depending portion of rear wall I to move about suchpins aspivot points. Intermediate'the'lower edges of the side walls'G,I-I and the hinge'or' pivot pins J,-J 'the side edgesof the rear wall-I is provided with recesses K, K to'facilitatetheopening and closing of the lid. i
Within the container is=aperfume bottleiL having a length only slightly le'ss thanvthe-distance between the interior surfaces of wallsi B, I when the lid is closed and 'a'thickness only slightly less thanthe interior'heightof. the boxsin its closed condition. The width of theibottle isonly slightly less than the distance between the interior surfaces of the side walls. The stopper M of the bottle is provided with a smooth beveled surface N which inclines upwardly from the base of the stopper head and coacts with the lower edge of the rear wall to raise and to lower the upper end of the bottle. 7
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the perfume bottle L is in the container and the cover is closed, the rear wall I of the cover is in vertical position with the depending portion thereof intermediate the rear ends of the container walls C, D so that the container is fully closed. In this condition of the container, the depending portion of rear wall I also serves to strengthen and to brace the side walls C, D. When the cover is opened, the depending portion 'of rear wall I moves inwardly and upwardly about the hinge pins J, J as pivots into engagement with the inclined surface N of the bottle stopper M. As the cover continues its opening movement the camming action of the lower edge of wall I on surface N first causes the bottle to I be shifted into engagement with wall B if it is not already there, and then raises the stopper end .of the bottle above the upper edges of walls 0 and D as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. During'this opening movement the lower edge of wall I first moves down on surface N until wall I has reached an approximately horizontal position and then moves upwardly on such surface to the position shown in Fig. 3 with respect to such surface. When the cover'is fully opened the lower engaging edge of wall I will be raised above the walls C and D and the rear ends of the lower edges of walls G and H will engage the rear edges of walls 0 and D below the pivot pins J J (see Fig. 3), thereby preventing any further opening movement of the cover. In this position of the parts, the cover will remain open without any assistance due principally to the fact that the depending portion of the Wall I from the pivot pins J, J and the portion of the bottle from its line of engagement with the lower edge of wall I to its line of engagement with Wall E become in efiect a locked toggle arrangement which cannot be broken even by exerting a relatively large force down on the bottle. In this position of the parts also, the bottle L may be readily grasped for removal from the box. When the bottle is replaced after use, so that the surface N thereof engages the loweredge of wall I, the bottle when released will automatically assume its correct position in the container where it will be in engagement with both such edge and the wall B. The box can then be readily closed by pivoting the cover about pins J, J, the bottle during such movement being lowered gently into the box and under entire control through the cam-like coaction of wall I and surface N.
It will be seen that the present invention provides a simple, inexpensive construction which is very effective for the purposes for which it was designed. It willbe apparent also that certain changes in the specific construction described and shown may be made within the spirit of the invention and without departing from the'scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination of a container having a bottom, a front wall and side walls, the back of said container beingentirely open, a cover hinged to the rear ends of said side walls and having a rear wall projecting down below the pivotal axis of said cover to a point just short of the bottom of said container in the closed condition of the cover and serving as a rear wall for the container in such condition of the cover, a bottle provided with a closure in said container, said closure having a surface arranged to be slidably engaged by said rear wall as the cover is opened and configured to cause said rear wall, during its sliding engagement therewith, to raise such surface and consequently to raise the portion of the bottle on which it is provided.
2. The combination of a container having an opening in one side, a movable cover hinged to said container, said cover having a downwardly projecting, straight, rear wall portion closing said opening and positioned out of supporting engagement with an article in the container when the cover is closed, said cover portion being movable inwardly and upwardly of said container when the cover is openeul an article in said container having a dimension in the direction between said projecting portion and the opposite wall of the container, less than the distance between such parts When the cover is closed and greater than the distance between such parts when the cover is opened ,and said article having a surface arranged to be slidably engaged by said projecting portion as the cover is opened and configured to cause said depending portion during its sliding engagement therewith, to raise such surface and consequently to raise the portion of the article on which it is provided.
