Abstract

Stays.-The hinged lid of a box or cabinet is supported in an open position by a stay carrying a pin or roller which is movable in a guide member having a cam path or slot for the pin, and a movable bridging member with which the pin is adapted to engage to retain the lid in the raised position, a further opening movement of the lid causing the bridging member to move into a position which permits the pin to move for the lid to be closed. In Fig. 2 the staybar 5 is hinged to a lid 1 and a pin 7 at its lower end is movable in a slot 8 of a plate 9 secured to the cabinet 2. As shown the pin has been moved to the left by lifting the lid, until it engaged the incline 14 of the slot 24; the lid was then lowered and the pin dropped into a notch 19 of the bridge member 15 pivotally mounted at 16 on the plate 9. To close the lid it is first raised until the pin engages the side 21 of the slot 20 in the member 15; this member is thereby rocked until the edge of the notch 19 is below the level of the guide slot 8, when the lid is free to close. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the bridge member 15 is slidable and moves with the pin 7 along the slot 8. As the lid is raised the pin is prevented from entering the lower notch 42 of the member 15 by the inclined portions 39 of the guide slot. When the lid is opened into the position shown the pin 7 is permitted to drop into the notch 28 of the guide slot. On lifting the lid to close it again the pin 7 engages the notch 42 of the member 15, which is moved until the lower inclined part of its slot is positioned to bridge the notch 28; the lid may then be closed freely, the pin 7 pushing the slide 15 to the other end of the slot 8, ready for a subsequent opening movement. Stops are provided to limit the end sliding movements ot the bridging members.
