[Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A stay for hinged members, provided with interlocking means which automatically become operative or inoperative on successive opening and closing movements of the hinged members, comprises two arms 1, 2, connected by a pivot pin 3 and hinged at 4, 5 respectively to the members, which are hinged together at a point to the right of the stay as shown. A cigarshaped follower 9, integral with a star-wheel 13, is mounted on a pin on the arm 1; the arm 2 has a slot 8, opening into a wider part in which the follower can turn round, and a striker 11 adapted to engage the arms of the star-wheel. In the open position of the hinged members, the follower 9 rests across the mouth of the slot 8 to prevent closing ; on further opening of the members, the star-wheel engages the striker 11, as shown, and turns the follower into a position in which it can enter the slot 8 and allow the members to be closed. On reopening the members to their full extent, the star-wheel again engages the striker to turn the follower through a rightangle, so that slight closing brings the follower to the locking position across the mouth of the slot 8. A pin 18 on the arm 1 works in a slot in the arm 2 to limit the movement of the member. A dished cover is preferably provided for the mechanism held by riveting over pins 3, 18 and the pin carrying the follower. The cover serves to produce friction between the stay arms ; alternatively, spring means may be provided between the cover and the adjacent arm to produce friction.
