This invention relates to improvements in oven door hinge mechanisms, and it pertains to a mechanism that is constructed to support the door horizontally when it is opened, and to close the door when it is lifted, and hold the same closed.
l are aware that several forms of oven door mechanisms have been heretofore made and patented, but the mechanism herein shown and described is constructed in an improved manner.
The primary object of this invention is to make a mechanism that consists essentially of two pivoted parts, a lower one -having its lower end pivoted to the door, and its upper end pivotally supported by \a linli: whereby the door is permitted to swing from a fixed point.
Another object of the invention is to add a stop element between the stove structure and one of the two devices referred to above, whereby when the door reaches a horizontal position, a positivestop is formed by the stop element to hold it horizontal,

Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a door opening formed in the range structure, and 2 represents the oven door that closes the opening. V
The present invention comprises essentially an L-shaped member 3 that has its lower end 4 pivotally supported .to an arm 5 projecting from the door 2. The upper end 6 of the ls-shaped member '3 is pivotally connected by a link" 7 with an arm 8 projecting from a vertically disposed member 9. The member 9 will be connected in a convenient manner with the oven as will be readily understood.
No effort is made in these drawings to properly illustrate the form. of the door nor is there any efiort made to properly illus trate the range structure 10 since both the door and the range may be made of any desired construct-ion,
The vertical member 9 extends downward from the'arm 8 and has an indentation 11 or other desired construction that will suit ably hold the inner pointed end 12 of a stop member 13. The outer portion of the stop member has a longitudinal slot 14 that receives between its arms 15 the iii-shaped member 8. In the form of the invention here shown a suitable coil, spring 16 surrounds the member 13 its outer end surrounding a. projection 17 and its inner end resting upon a flange, pin or other formation 18 at the inner end of the member '13.
The function of the projection 17 is to hold the spring 16 and consequently hold the member 13 in proper relation with the L-shaped member'tl. I
It will be readilynnderstood that other means may be provided for holding the member 13 in proper relation to the Iii-shaped member 3 without departing from the spirit of the invention, Several forms will read ily suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art. However the particular form here shown is very simple and is the preterred form. The projection and thespririg 1t; surrounding the member 13 serve to hold both the spring and the member 13 in proper relation with the ti-shaped member 3.
lit will also be understood that it is not necessary for the operation of the stop member that the projection 17 be provided since it is clear that the body of the L-shaped lever 3 may engage the inner end 19 of the slot 14.
While the sliding member 13 is very simple and convenient and performs its function eiiic'iently, it will be understood thatvariations in this construction may be made without departing from the invention here disclosed, or without departing from the principle oi operation of the stop member 13 co-operating with the L-shaped member 3 to hold the door 2 in a horizontal position when it is opened. 4
By having'the member 13 with its longitudinal slot that will fit the L-shaped lever 3 comparatively snugly, the member i3 is held in alignment in a very simple manner.
Attention is directed to the factthat the lower end of the door 2 has a curved or spherical shaped portion that is in engagement with an inwardly extending re .ceiving part 21, and that the door in swinging is held within theinwardly extending member 21.
This method of hinging the door is simple and very edectivo since it requires no exllil lltld ent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a swinging oven door, of an L-shaped lever having its outer end pivotally connected with the door and its upper end pivotally connected by a link with the range structure, whereby the door may, swing to open and closed positions.
2. The combination with an oven door swinging from a fixed point, of an L-shaped lever having its outer end pivotally connected with the oven door and its upper end pivotally supported by a link. whereby the door may swing to open and closed positions.
3. The combination'with a range having a door opening, of a swinging door, an L- shaped lever having its lower end pivotallv' connected with the door and its upper end pivotally connected with the range, and a spring normally acting to push inward on the said lever for closing the door.
4. The combination with a range struciure having an oven door opening, of an oven door swinging from a fixed point. an L- shaped lever having its lower end pivotally connected with the door, its upper end pivotally connected by a link with the range. and a spring acting between the lever and the range serving to normally close the said door.
5. The combination with a range having an oven door opening, a swinging oven door, an L-shaped lever having its lower end pivotally connected with the oven door and its upper end pivotally'connecte'd by a link with the range, of a stop member located between the lever and the range for holding the door in a horizontal position.
6. The combination with a range having an oven door opening, a door, an L-shaped member having its lower end pivotally connected with the door and its upper end pivotally connected by a link with the range, or a stop member located between the vertical portion of the L-shaped member and the said range, the stop member adapted to engage the inner portion of the L-shaped member for holding the door in ahorizontal position, p
7. The combination with a range having an opening, a door, an L-shaped member having its lower end pivotally connected with thedoor and its upper end movably connected with the range and a spring exerting an inward pressure on the L-shaped ber for closing the'said door.
8. An oven door hinge mechanism comprising an L-shaped member having its lower end pivotally connected wi th the door and extending inward, its upper end movably connected with the range, a stop member located between the hinge and the said L- shaped member and engaging it to hold the door in a horizontal position when open.
9. A door hinge operating mechanism comprising an L-shaped member having its lower end pivotally connected with the door and extending inward and upward, the upper end being movably connected with the range, a stop member consisting of a sliding rod telescoping the L-shaped member whereby it serves to hold the door in a horizontal position when open.
10. A door hinge mechanism comprising a range structure, an L-shaped member pivotally connected with the door and extending inv. ard and upward, its upper end movably supported, a stop member locatedbctween the L-shaped member and the range and a spring surrounding the stop member and acting to normally push the L-shaped lever inward and close the door.
11. A door operating mechanism comprising a range, a door, an L-shaped member having its lower end pivotally connected with the door extending inwardly and upward, the upper end of the member movably connected with the range, a stop member having its inner end pivotally supported by the range and its outer end adapted to engage the said lever when the door is in a horizontal position.
12. An oven door mechanism comprising a range, a door, an L-shaped member extending inwardly and upwardlya vertical member secured to the range, the upper end of the L-shaped member movably supported to the vertical member. a stop member having its inner end swingably connected with the vertical member, the outer portion of the stop member constructed to engage the L- shaped member when it is in a horizontal position.
13. A winging door construction comprising a range structure, a door, an L-shaped lever having one end connected with the door and a link connecting the opposite end with the range structure.
14. A swinging door construction comprising a, range structure, an L shaped lever having its horizontal end extending outward and connected with the door, and a link connecting its opposite'end with the range H structure.
