Description

Nov. 7, 1933. E, NA B 1,934,554
DOOR CLOSER AND CHECK Filed Sept. 19, 1932 Gharls Efl abb INVENTOR ATTO R N EY WITNESS:
Patented Nov. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application September 19, 1932 Serial No. 633,884
1 Claim.
This invention relates to door closers and checks and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly installed to a door and. its frame and which will efficiently close the door when opened and as the door nears a closed position it will retard the closing movement so as to close the door quietly without sudden shock or vibration to the door.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a door closer and check applied to a door and its frame and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view taken at right angles to Figure 1, illustrating the attaching of the device to the door frame.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, partly in section showing the door in an open position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a swinging door hinged to its frame 2 and the latter carries a bracket 3 having spaced ears 4 receiving a pintle 5 on which is journaled arms 6 formed integrally with a lever '7. The lever '7 has angularly related portions 8 and 9 and the portion 8 adjacent the portion 9 has pivoted thereto one end of a cylinder 10 in which is mounted a piston 11 carrying a stem 12 which extends exteriorly of the cylinder and is pivoted to a bracket 13. The bracket 13 is secured to the door 1 and also has pivoted thereto a link 14 which is in turn pivoted to the free end of the portion 9 of the lever 7 as shown in Figure l. The free end of the cylinder 10 is provided with a removable cap 15 through which the stem of the piston slides and is engaged by one end of a coiled spring 16, the other end of which bears against the piston 11 for the purpose of urging the piston in one direction or towards'the pivoted end of the cylinder. The last-named end of the cylinder is provided with a vent opening controlled by an adjustable needle valve 17 whereby the passage of air through the vent opening may be regulated. With the needle valve properly set, air is drawn into the cylinder by the opening of the door. This movement of the door causes the piston to compress the spring 16 and when the door is released the spring moves the door to a closed position and the piston acts against the air in the cylinder, retarding the movement of the piston as it nears the pivoted end of the cylinder and allows the spring 16 to gradually move the piston towards the pivoted end of the cylinder for gradually closing the door without noise or sudden striking of the door against its frame. By adjusting the valve 17 the movement of the piston 11 towards the pivoted end of the cylinder may be varied for the purpose of regulating the movement of the door into a closed position.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed. 35
Having described the invention, I claim:
A door closer and check comprising a substantially L-shaped lever including short and long arm portions and said short arm portion bifurcated and pivoted to a door frame adjacent the connection of a hinged door to said frame, a link pivoted to the end of the long arm portion, a bracket pivoted to the link and secured to the door, a cylinder pivoted to the short arm adjacent the bifurcation, a spring pressed piston in the cylinder and pivoted to the bracket, said cylinder having a vent opening and a valve for controlling the vent opening.
