INVENTOR ATTORNEY Dec; 3, 1929. J. P. MATTHEWS DOOR ATTACHMENT Filed May 8. 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 d. P Matthe s WITNESS:
ATTORNEY ltatented Dec. 3, 1929 STATE PATENT 1 JOSEPH I. MATTHEWS, E MIT.OHELLVILLE,.MARYLAND noon ATTACHMENT Application filed May 8, 1926. Serial No. 107,800.
ment, and thus provide for ventilation when desired, without danger of the door slamming.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a door attachment which acts as m a stop to prevent accidental movement of the door, means being provided for releasing the stop for the operation of the door knob so that when the latter i rotated to unlatch the door for the purpose of opening the same,
is the stop will be simultaneously released so as not to interfere with the doorsniovement.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to he hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
in the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a door with the 9.5 invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 showing the door in closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the door as partly open.
Figure l is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 4l4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a vertical section taken at the rear of the door knob and showing the manner of attaching the operating cable to the knob.
Referring in detail to the drawings, where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a door, whose frame 11 includes a transom 12, the door, frame and transom being of the usual or any desired construction, being merely illustrated to show one of the many applications of the invention.
Secured above the top of the door 10 to some stationary object, such as the door frame or transom frame, is a bearing 13 and mounted with this hearing for pivotal movement is a vertically disposed arm 14- which is carried by a rod 15, the latter being adapted to swing in the arc of a circle with the arm Has a center.
tilecured to the door 10 is a bracket 15 and extending vertically from this bracket is a sleeve or housing 17, the latter being provided with a transverse opening or slot 18 for thepassagc of the bar 15. Operating within the sleeve 17 is a spring actuated plunger 19, one end of which is pointed to provide tooth for engagement with transversely arranged notches 20 which are provided along the lower edge of the bar 15.
The opposite or lower end of the plunger 19 is engaged by a spring actuated pivotally mounted member 19 which has secured thereto one end of a cable 21, the latter passing around a pulley 22 and a pulley 23 and extending downwardly through eyes 24 where it is secured to the door knob 25. For the purpose of securing the cable 21 to the door knob there is provided a pair of clamping members 26 which are secured around the shank of the knob so as to extend on opposite sides to provide oppositely disposed arms 27, the lower end of the cable 21 being bifurcated so as to connect with each of the arms 27, as shown at 28.
lVhen the knob is rotated in either direction to unlatch the door, the cable 21 will be drawn downward so as to release the plunger 19 from the notches of the bar 15 and thus permit the door to be opened as desired. As soon as the knob is released, the spring action of the member 19 will cause the plunger to. re-engage the bar 15 and hold the door against accidental movement.
In order to provide auxiliary means for releasing the door and to also prevent reengagement of the plunger 19 with the bar 15, when desired, there is provided a branch cable 29 which is secured to the cable 21 and which passes over a pulley 30. The branch cable 29 carries at its free end a ring or other device 31, which may be engaged with a hook or other member 32 secured to the door.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a door, of a bracket secured to the door, said bracket having an opening therethrough, a guide member mounted within and extending from the bracket, a bar slidable through the guide member and having one end pivotally secured adjacent the door, a plunger slidable within the guide member for engagement ture.
with the bar to hold the latter against sliding movement, a spring influenced fiat plate having one end pivotally secured to the bracket and engaging the lower end of the plunger and acting to normally hold the latter engaged with the bar, and means connecting the otherv end of the pivotally mounted plate and the knob of the door to actuate the plate and release the plunger.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa- JOSEPH P. MATTHEWS.
