Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d N 16 1920 Application filed April 9, 1917. Serial No. 160,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. NEEDLE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Collinsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved locking mechanism for windows, in which the releasing mechanism is located at a distance away from the window so that if an intruder broke a portion of a window pane for the introduction of his hand, he cannot reach the releasing mechanism.
Another object is to provide an improved locking mechanism that will automatically lock the sashes when they are moved to a closed position.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplf fying the invention, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the wall of a room, 2 a window frame. 3 the upper sash and 4 the lower sash. Rec procally mounted in bushings 5 and 6, which are located in one side of the window frame 2, are a pair of locking bolts 7 and 8, respectively, said locking bolt 7 being adapted to engage a socket or pocket 9 whlch 1s formed in the upper sash 3, whereas the bolt 8 is adapted to engage a socket 10 which is formed in the lower sash 4. Secured on the inside of the wall 1 1s a guiding bracket 11, said locking bolts 7 and 8 being reciprocally mounted in said bracket. Formed on one end of each of the bolts 7 and 8 is an eye 12, and secured to each eye ofeach of said bolts is a connecting link 13, the opposite ends of said links being secured to a draw plate 14 by the nuts 15.
Secured to said draw plate at 16 is one end of a coil spring 17, the opposite end of said sprln being secured at 18 to the bracket 11. ecured at 19 to said draw plate 14 is one end of a connecting rod 20, the opposite end of said rod being pivotally secured at 21 to a pivoted plate 22, said plate being secured by the bracket 23 to the inside of the wall 1.
Secured to and extending from the plate 22 is ashifting handle 24, said handle protruding through a slot 25 which is formed in the wall 1.
In the operation of this improved locking device, when the sashes 3 and 4 are in their closed positions, the sockets 9 and 10 thereof are in alinement with their respective locking bolts 7 and 8, the locking bolts being normally held seated in their respective sockets-by the contraction of the springs 17.
When it is desired to withdraw the locking bolts from their seated positions, the handle 24 is engaged and pushed toward the opposite end of the slot 25. This movement will cause the plate 22 to turn on its pivot, thereby exerting a pull on the connecting rod 20 and causing the draw plate 14 to act on the links 13, thereby withdrawing the bolts from their respective sockets.
The sashes are then unlocked ready to move to an open position. It is to be noted that the pressure of the spring 17 is normally tending to move the bolts 7 and 8 to their locking positions. Therefore, when the sashes are moved to their closed positions, in which the sockets thereof will be placed in alinement with their respective bolts, said bolts will immediately engage their respective sockets.
If it is desired to lock the upper and lower sashes 3 and 4 in opened positions, said sashes are moved to positions in which their respective sockets 26 and 27 will be in alinement with their respective locking bolts 7 and 8.
From the aforesaid description, it is readily seen that a locking device of an im roved character relative to window sashes 18 provided, as the same cannot be tampered with from the outside, the locking bolts 7 and 8 being embedded in the woodwork oftheir respective sashes, While the releasing mechanism, namely the pivoted plate 22, handle 24 and parts relating thereto are far-Ont of reach of the intruder, even though a small openinglis made in thewindow paneforthe insertion of the arm of the intruder.
If desired a Wearing surface can'be provided for the locking ends of the-bolts 7 and Sasshmvnin Fig.6, in which the "sash 3 has a metallic channel member 28 formed onone of theverti'calstrips thereof.
As shown "in Fig. 6, if desired, a pair of locking devices and B can be operated by onere'leasing mechanism relative'to a pair of-Wi'ndo'ivsl) and E, i'n'which the releasing mechanism can be arranged centrally of the Windows, the pivoted plate 29: having 'pivotal connection with the connecting rods'30 and 31 of the 'lockingdevices A i and B respectively.
