Abstract
382,760. Door-operating appliances. WEBBERLEY, D. J., 33, Lowther Hill, and ADAMS & SON, Ltd., J., 105, Union Street, Southwark, both in London. Nov. 10. 1931, No. 31163. [Class 65 (i).] In a spring-closing and fluid check device of the type usually fitted to the top of a door, having the check cylinder placed below the spring mechanism, a spiral spring is carried in an open-ended drum and is adapted to be wound up either from the inside or the outside, according to which way the door is opened, all the stops for the spring being on the outside of the cover closing the part of the body containing the spring mechanism ; this cover carries the complete spring mechanism. The device may be used for doors opening one way only, of either hand, or may be adapted for spring doors. The apparatus is mounted on the door, and is driven by a lever connected to the door frame by an adjustable link, the lever being slightly inclined to the perpendicular to the door in the closed position. The spring 10, Fig. 1, is carried in, and attached at its outer end to, a drum 8 fixed to a sleeve 7 which rotates in the cap 2 of the device and carries a ring 6 with a projection 6a. Inside the sleeve 7 is another sleeve, to which the inner end of the spring is attached, and this sleeve is fixed to a toothed member 11. Between the members 6, 11 is a ring 4, with a projection 4a, carrying a pawl 5 for engagement with the member 11. The check crankshaft passes through all these members, and has a squared upper end 12 to receive the driving-lever. The cap 2 carries a fixed stop 3 engaging between the projections 4a, 6a and the driving- lever also has a projection similarly engaging between these two projections. When the door is opened, the member 4 or 6, according to the direction of opening, is rotated away from the stop 3 by the projection on the driving- lever, the other member remaining against the stop, and the spring is thus stressed for the closing movement, force being transmitted from the member 4 to the spring through the pawl 5 and toothed member 11, which provide for adjustment of the initial stress of the spring. Owing to the inclination of the lever, the spring still exerts a slight closing force when the door is closed. For swing-doors, opening in both directions, the lever is still inclined, but the spring must exert no force on the door when the door is closed, and both members 4, 6 must be in engagement with the stop 3. The driving-lever is therefore coupled to the crankshaft by means of a short lever 29, Fig. 13, which has a boss 31 with a squared hole for engaging the shaft 12, a projection 18 for engaging the projections 4a, 6a, and a pin 30. The driving-lever has a hole for bearing on the boss 31, and two small holes, one near each edge, to fit the pin 30 ; when the lever 29 lies perpendicular to the door, so that the spring holds both members 4, 6 against the stop, the driving-lever thus lies at a small angle to the lever 29, the pin 30 being engaged in one or other of the holes in the driving-lever according to which side of the door carries the device.
