Abstract
413,846. Spring pivots; door-closing springs. ADAMS & SON, Ltd., J., WEBBERLEY, J. A., KELTING, G., and READE, C., 105, Union Street, Southwark, London. May 12, 1933, No. 13914. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A door-closing spring accommodated in a shoe-like fitting built into the door, for example at the heel of the door, is of the torsion type, vertically disposed and spirally surrounding the axis of two concentric members to which the ends of the spring are anchored and which are connected respectively to the door and the floor or frame ; the axis of the two concentric members is preferably coincident with the pivot axis. The lower corner of the door is provided with a barrel 4 closed at its lower end by a disc 5 fixed to it ; the floor fitting has a spigot 24 with a hollow at the top to receive a ball on which the door is supported. The spiral spring 8 is enclosed in a drum 7 bearing in the barrel 4, and is attached at its outer end to the drum and at its inner end to a sleeve 11 rotatable on the spigot 24. The lower end of the drum 7 is fixed to a member 16, having a ring 15 non- rotatably attached to it ; the lower end of the sleeve 11 has a toothed flange, with which engages a pawl (not shown) carried by a ring 14, which is thus carried round with the sleeve but is adjustable relatively thereto to vary the tension of the spring. The rings 14, 15 each have a stop, and between these stops is an abutment 28 on the floor plate and a member 20 which is adjustable on a transverse screw 21 carried by the door to enable the closed position of the door to be corrected. The door may be retained in an open position by a spring plunger 29 engaging a recessed boss 38 on the floor plate. For lubrication of the mechanism, the spring drum 7 is packed with grease, which is fed through a hole in the sleeve 11 to the spigot 24 and through a slit in the drum 7 to a channel in the disc 5 and thence through a hole in the disc to the surface of the member 16. In a modification, the floor plate forms the horizontal part of a member of L-shape fixed to the door-post. Specification 413,845 is referred to.
