Abstract

Organic pigments are improved as regards colouring power and miscibility with drying-oils, water, &c. by grinding in the wet or dry state with a small proportion of a sulphuric ester of an alcohol having 10-20 carbon atoms in the molecule. The sodium salt of the ester may be used, and traces of caustic soda may be present during the grinding. The grinding under aqueous conditions of Monolite Fast Scarlet RNS, artificial indigo, and the azo-pigment obtained by combining diazotized 2 : 4-dinitro-aniline with b -naphthol is described, the products, if desired, being dried and then powdered. Stearyl or dodecyl sulphate, oleyl, stearyl, or cetyl sodium sulphate, and the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of sperm oil alcohols, are specified as assistants. The Provisional Specification describes the grinding or kneading of pigments or aqueous pastes thereof with a small proportion of a sulphonic acid or sulphuric ester having in the molecule an aliphatic carbon chain of more than 8 carbon atoms, or its sodium or ammonium salt, cetyl sulphobenzyl ether or its sodium salt, dodecyl sodium sulphate, and dodecyl sulpho-acetate or its ammonium salt being specified.ALSO:Inorganic and organic pigments are improved as regards colouring power and miscibility with drying oils, water, &c. by grinding in the wet or dry state with a small proportion of a sulphuric ester of an alcohol having 10-20 carbon atoms in the molecule. The sodium salt of the ester may be used, and traces of caustic soda may be present during the grinding. The grinding may be effected in presence of a base such as barytes. The grinding under aqueous conditions of prussian blue, ultramarine, monolite Fast Scarlet RNS, artificial indigo, and the azo-pigment obtained by combining diazotized 2 : 4-dinitroaniline with b -naphthol is described, the products, if desired, being dried and then powdered. Stearyl or dodecyl sulphate, oleyl, stearyl or cetyl sodium sulphate, and the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of sperm oil alcohols, are specified as assistants. The Provisional Specification describes the grinding or kneading of pigments or aqueous pastes thereof with a small proportion of a sulphonic acid or sulphuric ester having in the molecule an aliphatic chain of more than 8 carbon atoms, or its sodium or ammonium salt, cetyl sulphobenzyl ether or its sodium salt, dodecyl sodium sulphate, and dodecyl sulpho-acetate or its ammonium salt being specified.
