Abstract

391,932. Maintaining defined speeds of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and POLLOCK, A. A., Croxton House, Sherbourne Place, Leamington Spa. Feb. 9, 1932, No. 3866. [Class 38 (iii).] The field strength of a motor driving a spindle or drum for reeling wire is regulated automatically, in accordance with the tension in the wire, by looping the wire 3 over two pulleys 4, 5, one of which is fixed, while the other is carried by a pivoted lever 6 controlled by a spring 7, which tends to move the lever in a direction opposite to that induced by the tension in the wire, regulation being effected by movement of the lever. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, in which the reeling drum 2 is driven by a constant voltage motor 1, on increase of the tension in the wire beyond a predetermined amount, the arm 6 is moved against the action of the spring to short-circuit a resistance 10 in series with the field winding 11 of the motor, thereby reducing the speed of the motor. In a modification, Fig. 3, the arm' 6 varies the pressure on a carbon pile resistance 12 in series with the field winding 11. Further modifications for constant current motors are described ; in these movement of the arm on increased tension in the wire is arranged to increase the resistance in the field circuit in order to reduce the speed of the motor.
