Abstract
705,179. Control of D.C. motors. LAURENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS, Ltd., and LANGHAM, E. M. March 24, 1952 [March 22, 1951], No. 6902/51. Class 38(3) The speed and torque of a series motor M driving a drum upon which is wound strip material after the material has been annealed or otherwise treated is varied in predetermined relation to the strip speed to maintain approximately constant tension of the strip, or, alternatively, when a motor other than the reeling motor is used to maintain approximately constant strip tension, to provide substantially constant strip speed irrespective of build-up of the reel. The motor is supplied through a variable voltage transformer Tn which provides a voltage proportional to the linear speed of the strip and is connected to transformer Tt having a transformation ratio proportional to the square root of the tension of the strip. A voltage in accordance with the product of the strip speed and the square root of the tension is thus supplied through resistor Rn and rectifier X to the motor, a transformer T supplying compensation for the drop in the rectifier. The motor is either connected to a high voltage D.C. source Vd through resistor R, or the rectifier is connected to a high voltage A.C. source Vc through resistor Rc, in order to provide the motor with an additional torque compensating for frictional losses. The value of the resistor Rn is made a function, preferably linear, of the speed, the adjusting arms S, S2, of the transformer Tn and the resistor being simultaneously adjustable. This provides satisfactory operation at reduced powers. The resistance Rn may be replaced by a grid-controlled mercury arc rectifier.
