D., 33, Russell Terrace, Leamington, both in Warwickshire. Jan. 27, 1934, No. 2861. [Class 38 (iii)] Means for winding a web upon a reel at substantially constant speed comprises an alternating current commutator motor driving the reel having brush-shifting means actuated in accordance with any difference between the speed of the web and a constant speed. A roll in contact with the web actuates through a variable gearing 8, 9 one element of a differential gear, a constant-speed electric motor 6 actuates a second element thereof and the third element 7 is coupled to the brush gear of the driving motor 5 so that the speed of the winding roll 4 is progressively changed as the winding diameter increases and the speed of the web remains constant. In a machine wherein the web is being unwound from a reel 2 at the same time, an alternating current commutator motor 11 is controlled to give a like speed of the web by connecting its brush gear to a counterweighted tension-compensating roll 14, determining the tension in the web.
