406,482. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Shoults, D. R. ; 318, Charles Street, Scotia, New York, U.S.A.) March 4, 1933, No. 6650. Convention date, March 5, 1932. [Class 38 (iii).] In an arrangement in which a braking generator applies a drag to a driving motor, an auxiliary boosting generator is connected between the braking generator and the driving motor, and the arrangement is such that the E.M.F. of the braking generator is equal to the back E.M.F. of the driving motor. Motors 15, 16, drive a paper winding reel 12 against the braking action of a generator 30 connected to the unwinding reel 11, and are supplied from a variable voltage generator 25. An auxiliary generator 38 is connected in a circuit connecting the generators 30, 25, and has a separately excited field 39, and a field 41 carrying the current of the motor 15, 16. With the generator 25 supplying no current to the motors 15, 16, the auxiliary generator 38 is effective to tension the paper to an extent determined by the adjustment of the field regulator 40, and by means of the field 41 of the generator 38, which compensates for variation in the current taken by the motors, and a carbon pile regulator 32 adjusted by the current of the generator 30, which compensates for the change in the diameter of the reel, this tension is maintained at a constant value as the speed of the motors 15, 16, is increased by means of the generator field regulator 27.
