Abstract

17,838. Vandervell, C. A., and Midgley, A. H. Aug. 1. Exciting.-A self-regulating dynamo for train and car lighting &c. comprises main poles a, Fig. 1, each of which is provided with an ordinary shunt or series exciting-winding c or with a constant excitation, and supplementary poles b, each of which is excited by a winding d connected between a main brush e and a supplementary brush f. The windings on the supplementary poles produce a field acting in opposition to but smaller in magnitude than the armature cross-field produced by the armature conductors i under the main poles. When the speed increases above the normal, the generating-field of the main poles is diminished. Instead of constructing the machine with projecting supplementary poles, these may be dispensed with, the windings for producing flux in opposition to the armature cross flux being arranged on the field-magnet yoke.
