[Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVII] The current input to a motor 16 is maintained constant by means of a vibratory contact regulator 25, and the setting of the regulator is varied by means of the current passing through a dynamo-electric machine 33 energized in accordance with the variable speed of a second motor 13, and having operating characteristics such that its current varies in accordance with the rate of change of speed of the motor 13. The motor 16 drives the reel 12 on which material is wound at constant tension as it is delivered from rolls 11 operated by the motor 13, and the system is such that the constant tension is maintained during acceleration and deceleration of the motors 13, 16. These motors are fed from a Ward-Leonard generator 14, and the machine 33 which operates a flywheel 34 whereby the desired characteristic is obtained, is included in circuit with an auxiliary coil 35 on the regulator 25 and fed from a generator 32 driven by the motor 13. A variable resistance 41 in shunt to the coil 35 is adjusted simultaneously with the tension-adjusting resistance 28 associated with the main coil 26 of the regulator. The coil 35 acts in opposition to the coil 26 during acceleration of the motors 13, 16, and cumulatively therewith during deceleration. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the generator 32 is omitted, the circuit comprising the machine 33 and the coil 35 being connected across the Ward- Leonard generator. In this modification also, the field of the machine 33 is fed in series with the field 23 of the motor 16, and the Ward-Leonard generator controller has further high speed positions in which the field of the motor 13 is varied, the regulator 25 also acting to maintain constant tension during this further speed-changing stage. In a further modification of the arrangement shown in the Figure, described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown), the armature circuit of the motor 16 includes a booster generator driven at constant speed and having a field winding included in circuit with the machine 33. In this arrangement the tension of the material is maintained constant during speed changes, partly by the action of the booster generator, and partly by the regulator. The system is applicable in cases where the material is unwound from the reel under braking tension provided by the motor 16.
