Abstract
Steel alloys, for use as high-speed steels and for making knives, files, drawing nozzles, &c. are low in carbon and contain 5-35 per cent of tungsten and 5-50 per cent of cobalt, and are quenched from high temperatures and annealed at lower temperatures. The tungsten may be wholly or partly replaced by molybdenum, and the cobalt by chromium, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, silicon, aluminium, vanadium, copper, uranium, zirconium, beryllium, or titanium. An example contains 15 per cent of tungsten, 30 per cent of cobalt, 0,80 per cent of carbon, 0,1 per cent of silicon, and 0,6 per cent of manganese, and is quenched in oil at 1250 DEG C. and annealed at 650 DEG C. for one hour.
