[Class 80 (ii).] Reversing-gearing for propelling ships comprises a friction clutch g and a like brake h supported side-by-side in a planet-carrying drum f of the gearing and brought into action alternatively by turning a control valve m which may be situated anywhere about the ship. Stepped planet gears c, c<1> supported in the drum f mesh respectively with an annulus b secured. to the engine flywheel a and with a sun gear e fast on the propeller shaft d. On turning the valve m for forward drive, oil pumped constantly by the engine passes from within the valve barrel through a duct x to a chamber r between two ribbed clutch plates g feathered on the driven element. The gearing then turns solid. For reversed drive, the oil passes by a duct y to a chamber s between two ribbed plates h rendered stationary by being feathered on a hollow member i secured to a fixed casing k. The gears c, c<1> turn on fixed axes driving the gear e and shaft d reversely. In mid-position of the control valve, oil passes by a branched duct w to chambers n arranged for disengaging the clutch and brake movable plates. Oil for lubrication is constantly circulated to an ahead thrust bearing t and to astern thrust bearings u, v.
