Abstract
213,156. Vulcan-Werke Hamburg und Stettin Akt.-Ges. March 26, 1923, [Convention date]. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-In propulsion mechanism for ships having reciprocating oil engines as prime movers and mechanical gearing transmitting the power to the propeller shaft, a hydraulic gear or clutch is placed between each engine and the transmission gear. The hydraulic gear is primarily employed for damping out oscillations, and secondarily for giving gear reduction, reversal, or declutching. In a multiple unit installation each engine 1 drives a hydraulic gear 4 which in turn drive the pinions 6 whch mesh with gear wheels on the propeller shaft 9. Couplings 2, thrust and journal bearings 3, and sliding clutches 5 are included in the lay-out. Electric motors 10 may be included, the disposition being governed by the requirements. A reversing hydraulic clutch may be fitted between the final transmission and propeller shaft. Modifications in the relative dispositions of the prime movers are described.
