Abstract

217,387. Garrard, C. G. April 30, 1923. Driving arangements for screw propellers.-Friction gearing of the kind described in Specification 211,521 is employed to transmit the drive from a turbine or other driving- shaft to a marine propeller shaft the necessary axial binding pressure being provided by the propeller thrust. In the epicyclic reduction gear shown in Fig. 1, the turbine shaft 1 is provided with hardened steel concave or convex surfaces 5 engaging planetary rollers 10 secured on a sleeve 9 loose on bolts 7 carried in a cage 6. The rollers 10 also engage races 13 secured in a stationary casing 2. Rollers 17, smaller than the rollers 10, are secured on the sleeve 9 and engage with a loose pressure-supporting central roller 25 and a multiple race 21 secured in a cage 20 turning with the propeller shaft 19. Fig. 3 shows a speed-reducing and reversing gear. The planetary spindles 27 carry rollers 28, 31 as in Fig. 1, and also rollers 32 larger than the rollers 28 and engaging races 35 on the drive cage 37. The races 33, 35 on the cage 37 are formed as curves of the kind described in Specification 211,521, merging into oppositely inclined cones, the shaft 19 and cage 37 being movable axially by hand or power when the engine is stopped to bring the races alternatively into engagement with the rollers 31, 32 for forward or reverse drive. The propeller thrust maintains the required pressure in both directions of drive. In the reversing- gear shown in Fig. 4, the turbine shaft 1 is secured to the cage 39 carrying the single or multiple rollers 41, 42, 43, the forward and reverse rollers 42, 43 engaging respectively with races 52 ,47, which may be alternatively clutched to the propeller shaft 19 while the engine is in motion by a double cone-clutch 50 movable axially with the shaft 19. Specification 123,524, [Class 4, Aeronautics], is referred to.
