Abstract
134,541. Philippeau, H. Oct. 31, 1918, [Convention date]. Friction gearing.-A ball bearing is employed as epicyclic reducing or multiplying friction gearing. As shown in Fig. 1, the end of a driving- shaft 15 supported in a ball bearing 1 in a casing 12 has secured to it the cage 16 of a ball bearing or gear 2. The balls a of this train roll on a fixed outer race b and drive the inner race c at increased speed. The cage 16<1> of the next train is secured to the race c, and so on to a driven shaft 19. Rollers secured to the cages 16, 16<1> .. may project between the balls a .. transmitting the drive to them. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the friction planet gears 41, 41<1> .. are journaled upon cages or planet-carriers 37, 37' .. The outer and inner races have fixed inclined members 42, 45, respectively, and members 43, 46, which are connected through ball thrust bearings 50 so as to move together to produce or increase frictional engagement. Balls 51 carried in separate pockets 52, Figs. 8 and 9, between the members 46 and the next planet-carrier such as 37<1> have a wedging action, thrusting the movable race members against the planet elements 41. The planet elements and races may be substantially cylindrical and provided wlth flutings to increase the grip. A single train adapted for driving aero-propellers is shown in Fig. 10. Spherical planetary gears 68, journaled in a disk 62 on the engine shaft 56, gear with fixed outer and inner half races 69, 72. Movable outer and inner half races 70, 78 are actuated by wedging balls 84 arranged similarly to the balls 51, Figs. 8 and 9. The drive is taken from a shaft 77 turning with the inner driven race.
