376,614. Printers' composing- machines. ELLIOTT, R. C. and MONOTYPE CORPORATION, Ltd., 43, Fetter Lane, London. Nov. 18, 1931, No. 31986. Addition to 349,680. [Class 100 (iii).] Leading-mechanism.-Leading-mechanism of the kind described in the parent Specification is modified so as to adapt it either for intermittent leading, in which a part only of the composition is leaded, or for continuous leading, in which the whole of the matter is leaded. Intermittent leading is effected under.the action of signals in the record-strip, and continuous leading is effected by mechanical means independently of the strip. The leading-galley B, Fig. 2, is, as heretofore, moved towards and away from the gate or rule A<5> of the type galley by a lever D<2> and a motor D, controlled by a valve-device D<6>, which can be operated both from the record-strip and mechanically by projections &c. on the galley cam. The valvedevice contains a piston-valve D', Fig. 8, which is maintained in its highest position by a spring D<8>, in which position air from a constant supply enters by a conduit D<9> and passes by a conduit D<10> to the motor D. The two components of the leading-signal admit air by ports D<11>, D<12>, Fig. 4, below and above the valve respectively. Two spring latches E, E<1>, Fig. 8, serve to hold the valve in its intermediate and lowest positions respectively. When continuous leading is required, the latch E<1> is locked out of action. A projection on the galley cam depresses the valve, which is held down by the latch' E. In the further action of the machine, a second projection on the cam trips the latch and releases the valve at the proper moment for the operation of the leading-galley. When intermittent leading is required, the latch E<1> is brought into use. The latches E<1>, E are successively tripped by projections on the galley cam, so that the valve rises to its highest position, when both components of the leading- signal are present. When a line is not to be leaded, it is accompanied by only one component of the leading-signal, the effect of which is to depress the valve after the latch E<1> has been tripped, so that the valve is again engaged by the latch.
