Abstract

350,311. Type-making machines. ELLIOTT, R. C. and LANSTON MONOTYPE CORPORATION, Ltd., 43, Fetter Lane, London. July 26, 1930, No. 22557. [Class 100 (iii).] Single-type composing and casting machines.-Relates to means for positioning an additional row of matrices in one or both directions of movement of the die-case in machines such as that described in Specification 8633/99, [Class 100, Printing, Letterpress &c.]. The end pin B<15>, Fig. 1, of one series B<1> of positioning-pins, which is normally fixed, is made retractable, so that the die-case can move one step farther. The pin B<15> is held projected by air led to it by a pipe e<1> from a constant supply e<2>, and the supply can be cut off by valve mechanism under the control of a special signal in the record strip, whereupon the pin drops, or is retracted by a spring. The valve mechanism comprises a casing E, Fig. 3, containing a piston E<1> and a valve E<2>. The constant air supply to the pin B<15> enters the casing by a conduit e, and leaves by a conduit e<3>. The special signal controls two ports c, c<1>, Fig. 1, in the air-bar C, from which pipes e<5>, e<10> lead to the valve casing, and thence to pins B<11>, B<13> in the second series B of positioning- pins, which are normally operated by the components of the signal. Air reaching the valve casing from the port C<1> passes by a branch conduit e<7> into the bottom of the casing below the piston E<1>, which is thereby raised, and lifts the valve E<2>. If air at the same time passes from the port c to the valve casing, this air passes below the valve, which is raised farther. The conduits leading to the pins B", B<13>, B<15> are thereby closed, so that the pins B<11>, B<13> are not operated, and the pin B<15> is withdrawn. The device may be duplicated, so as to act upon the end positioning-pin of the other series. Specifications 6331/10 and 227,144, [both in Class 100 (iii), Typemaking &c.], also are referred to.
