Single-type composing and casting machines.- Relates to the production of spaced-out type matter, as described in Specification 30037/10. In order that all kinds of justified composition and justified tabular matter may be produced when the spacing-cut mechanism is in operation, one or both of the normal justifying-signals are added to character and like signals, in order to operate the spacing-out mechanism, and other signals, which normally perform a different function in the machine, are diverted from their normal function, and are employed as the justifying- signals. The diversion of the signals is effected by valve-mechanism, with which is combined a hand-operated setting or switch device. The valve-mechanism, which is inserted in the pneumatic system leading from the perforated bar D, Fig. 3, over which the record-strip passes, to the operated parts of the machine, comprises a pistonvalve A, which can slide in a chamber B. Above the valve is located a switch-device A<1>, Fig. 7, which can be turned by means of a knob A<3>, and has air passages E<4>, F<7> in its underside. The justifying-devices K, L, Fig. 3, are normally operated by air passing through the ports E, F in the perforated bar D. Air from the port E passes through a pipe E<1>, through the passage E<4> in the switch A', and through a pipe E<7> to the justifying-device K. Air from the port F passes through a pipe F', through the passage F<7> in the switch A<1>, and through a pipe F<12> to the justifying- device L. A branch F<13> of the pipe F<1> leads to the spacing-out device N, which is of the kind described in Specification 30037/10. When spacedout matter is required, the switch A' is turned, so that air from the ports E, F is cut off from the justifying-devices K, L. Air from the port F then passes solely to the spacing-out device N, and the port E has no function. While the spacing-out device is in use, the justifying-devices K, L are operated by air from three ports G, H, I, which normally operate members m, m', m<2> of the die-case positioning-mechanism. The two justifying-signals are formed by the uncovering of the ports G, I or H, I. Air from the port I lifts the valve A, and, while it is so lifted, air from the ports G, H passes through passages in the valve and through the passages E<4>, F<7> in the switch A<1> to the justifying-devices.
