Single-type composing and casting machines.-Machines such as that described in Supecification 8633/99 are provided with means for positioning an additional row or rows of matrices in one or both directions of movement of the die-case, such means comprising an air-diverting mechanism located between certain of the airports controlled by the record-strip and the positioning stops or gauges connected therewith, so that when these ports are uncovered simultaneously, a normally fixed stop is withdrawn or an additional stop is projected. Each airdiverting mechanism D, Fig. 1, consists of three valves D<5>, D<6>, D<7>, Fig. 2, sliding in valvechambers d<2>, d<3>, d, each valve having connected to it a second and larger valve D<2>, D<3>, D<4>. Air from a constant supply passes through the valve chamber d to a normally fixed stop B<16>, Fig. 1. of the series B, and the air from the ports B<13>, B<14> in the air-tower A passes through the valvechambers d<2>, d<3> to the stops B", B<14>. When the ports B<13>, B<14> are uncovered singly by the recordstrip. the corresponding stops B<13> B<14> are projected. When the ports B<13>, B<14> are uncovered at the same time, air passes from the valvechamber d<3> by a passage d<6> beneath a piston D<9>, which rises and lifts a spring-closed valve D<9>. Air also passes from the valve-chamber d' by a passage d<7> to the chamber of the valve D<9> and thence by a passage d<8> beneath all three valves D<2>, D<3>, D<4>, which are thereby raised. The air supply to the stops B<13>, B<14> is thus cut off, and also the constant air supply to the stop B<15>, which falls or is retracted by a spring, so that the die-case is arrested by a fixed stop B<16>. A modification is described in which, by means of an air-diverter having four valves and operated by two special signals in the record-strip, a normally fixed stop may be withdrawn, or an additional movable stop projected, so that two additional rows of matrices may be positioned.
