For a more 'complet e disclosure of the adding equipment refereiTce is made to Patents' Nos. 825,469 to Laganke' and Smith, 825,494; to John A.- Smith, 829,791 to Lagankemnd Smith and to the co-pending application of Laganke and Smith No. 308,279.
Each of the registers? includes, as usual, what is known as the restoring slide '10 which, when moved back, eflects the resetvtingofthe carrying mechanism. So far 4 causing thebar 12 by coagtion with the pins as the register is concerned, the present invention contemplates no exchange except that the restoring slides 10 insteadof hav ing their'front ends extended beyond the front of the registers for 'coaction with a ca'in on the carriage, are each provided with a dependent pin 11 dropped suiliciently below the bottom of the register to coact with the universal'restoring bar 12 of a restoring yoke 13 carried by bracketsl lsecured to the register supporting bar 6 as by screws or other suitable securing devices 15. The restoring yoke 13 includes, besides the bar 12, a pair of side members 16 of angular or bell-crank form pivoted at their angles to the brackets 14.
Extended between the ends of the member 16 remote from the bar 12 is a second transverse .bar 17 having connection with a rest-oring motor 18 adapted when operated to, swing the yoke 13 for the purpose of 411 to operate the'slides 10 of the registers in order to restore the carrying mechanism thereof. In,its.,broader aspects it is immaterial what character of motor is employed for this purpose. In the present disclosure the ,motor 18 is in the form of a solenoid, the core or armature ,19 of which is formed at its upper end with a book 20 engaging the bar .17 and provided'at its lower end with a switch member orcircuit controlling device 21.. Encircling. the core 20 between the switch member 21 and the body portion of the solenoid is a "spring 22 which compels the retraction of the armature or core 19 when the solenoid is deenergized. 23- -23 indicate the terminals ot the solenoid-windingwhich are equipped with binding posts 24 for the attachment of the line wires a and 5 leading to a battery or other suitable source of electrical'energy c. The motor 18 is mounted on abracket 25 screwed or otherwise secured to the main frame of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1. It will now be fseen that ifthis circuit, including the battery: and solenoid, is cl0sed,the latter will be energized and the armature 19 thereof will rise against the resistance of the spring 22 thereby swinging the restoring yoke 13 and simultaneously restoring thev carrying mechanisms of all the registers. As soon, however, as the armature 19 reaches the limit of its upward movement, the switch member 21 will engage and span the inter.- val between the terminals 23 thus shortcircuiting the current and de'energizing the solenoid, the spring immediately retracting the parts to normal position.
Located in the motor circuit is'a circuit closing device 26 which may be and preferably is mounted on one of the carriage stops 2( which are ordinarily adyustably mounted on the frame of themachine and are set to arrest the carriage at any desired limit of movement. The circuit closing device 26 comprises two terminals 26 and 26 suitablv insulated from the stop 27 and arranged to be spanned. by one end of a springretracted plunger 26 likewise mounted on but insulated from the stop 27. This circuit closing device is adapted to be manually operated since the operator may at any time press theplunger 26" into contact with tirly independent of the carriage and may be effected regardless of the particular location of the carriage on the frame. It is intended, howeyer, to provide for boththe manual and automatic control of the re:
storingmeehanisnrso that, while the latter may be rendered active at any time, regardless of the position of the carriage, it will also be brought into action automatically when the carriage reaches a given position, preferably when the carriage is retracted to begin a newline of writing.
To accomplish this automatic control the arm or brac'ket28 usually extended from the left hand end of the carriage to engage the carriage stop 27 is provided with a pivoted plunger-operating member 29 disposed in line with the plunger 26 of the circuit closing device 26. Thus when the carriage ofthe typewriter is retracted the member 29 will contact with the plunger 26 urging the latter between the teri'niii'als 26'" and 26 and closing the. circuit. Obviously, the particular point in the retractile move.- ment of the carriage at which the operation of the restoring mechanism shall take place may be regulated by the adjustment of the s'top27 upon the frame in the usual manner.
The mechanism as thus far described'is entirely effective because the circuit will be ture of-which, upon the complete actuation- :meeeee a the right the member 29 will swing back to nermei pesition for a repetition of the detreelen scribed. peretion when the carriage is again a the retreat ft I ithen it. is net etesired that the eelriege An. shalt eutematlcally effect the openmg as Me .3 11 as the elesmg oi the clrcult durmg 1ts s-ers ere e-e-' l'et e? reetile mevement, it is merely necessary the resisten (May to reme-ve the pm 31, m- Whleh event the .sezzzmates the aefy 3' 0,.
