Setting and retaining devices for controlling- apparatus. - Comprises means for retaining a control pedal, such as the low-gear pedal of a Ford car, in any desired position, from which it can be readily released. A spring- pressed button 1, projecting above the face of the pedal A, carries a cam 6 acting through a roller 7 on a spring-pressed rod 12 having a pawl tooth adapted to engage a fixed quadrant. The first tooth 16 of the quadrant corresponds to the neutral position and the last tooth 17 to the low-gear position of the pedal. When the pedal is depressed and the button 1 simultaneously released the pawl .engages the quadrant and the pedal is held but .can be released by keeping the button depressed while allowing the pedal to come back. The quadrant, shown in plan in Fig. 8, has its toothed edge CD at an angle to the normal plane .of travel of the pedal, and is adjustably secured to a frame member of the vehicle by means of bolts passing through the slots 18, 19.
