Abstract
372,120. Low-temperature carbonization ; agitating and discharging charges. HERENG, A. J. A., 12, Rue Charles Nodier, Paris. May 30, 1931, No. 15850. Convention date, May 30, 1930. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] In a low-temperature carbonization process in which the charge is spread in a thin layer on a conveyer permeable to hot gases which are passed downwardly, the distillates being withdrawn from below the conveyer, the crust formed on the surface of the charge is broken up, and removed from the heating chamber, so that the layer is kept permeable to the heating gases. The charge from a hopper 2 is fed under a level regulator 3 on to an endless band 6, and the crust 4a is broken up by a series of helical paddles 11 co-operating with adjustable stop plates 14, the lower edges of which may be of toothed formation. The broken crust is conveyed laterally, and dipscharged through openings 12 into valved conduits 16 leading, for example, to a furnace 18 having a movable grate 19. The tubes 25, which support the plates 14, may be rotated by gear wheels 29, and are cooled by water introduced through pipes 27. The distillates are withdrawn through boxes 7, and the hot distilling gases are introduced through conduits 8, 9.
