Abstract

320,147. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 13, 1928. Retort furnaces.-In the heat treatment of solid materials, these slide down through heated pipes or retorts mounted at such an angle that the charge moves freely, baffles being provided to prevent the material from filling the retorts. The charge runs from a bunker 13 into charging ,hoppers 14, the rate of charging being controlled by the amount drawn off at the outlet 15, and the material passes in zig-zag fashion through the retorts 2 the thickness of the layer of material being controlled by baffles 20, the intake passages 4 and the retort intake 28. The retorts are heated by burners 11, the hot gases from a combustion chamber 5 being mixed in a chamber 7 with combustion products drawn by a blower 10 through a conduit 9. The hot gases circulate round the retorts and enter the conduit 9 through a passage 8.
