[Class 113 (i).] Fastening devices for ships' hatches comprise an angular clamping iron 6 the horizontal part 9 of which compresses the packing 5 between the edge of the cover-plate 3 and the hatch coaming iron when the bolt 7 is screwed down, the heel of the iron 6 meanwhile canting on the outer edge of the coaming. The hole 9 through which the bolt 7 is threaded is oblong to permit the iron to be slid back until its heel is free from the coaming. In a modification, the belt 14<1>, Fig. 4, securing the clamp is attached to the cover-plate, the clamping means comprising the screw 70 co-operating with the hooked edge 17 of the iron which engages with the flange of the coaming iron 16. The packing comprises a wooden lath 20 enclosed in canvas 21, with or without rubber strips 23 on one or both sides. Specification 348,017 is referred to.
