Abstract

363,835. Pipe joints. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and SAMUELSON, F., 44, Hillmorton Road, Rugby. Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38736. [Class 99 (i).] Fluidtightness between two pipes &c. 1, 2, Fig. 2, having end flanges 3. 4 is secured by a sealing ring 11 which is received within a groove 13 on a radial wall 9 formed on the flange 3. The groove 13 also accommodates a tongue 12 on a radial wall 10 formed on the flange 4, and the walls 9, 10 are so disposed relatively to the faces 14, 15 of the flanges 3, 4, and any interposed packing 20; that. they are deformed to compress the sealing ring 11 when the flange bolts 5 are tightened up. The walls 9, 10 are formed by annular grooves 7, 8 extending from within the pipe to near the bolts 5 and the internal fluid pressure acts upon the walls 9, 10 to augment the sealing pressure thereof, One of the flanges may be provided with a hole 19 from its periphery to the chamber 18 formed by the radial walls for observing any leakage of fluid. In a modification, Fig. 3, the radial walls are constituted by a metallic U-shaped &c. ring 29 having limbs 27, 28 each provided with a recess 25, 26 to receive a sealing ring 23, 24 and an annular tongue 21, 22 on the flanges 3, 4 respectively. The flanges are jointed in a spigot-and-socket manner.
