Abstract

357,314. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, LAWSON, R. H., 55, Cooke Street, Pawtucket, and CLOUTIER, A. N., 495, Broad Street, Lonsdale, all in Rhode Island, U.S.A. July 16, 1930, No. 21494. [Class 74 (ii).] To effect plain or normal plating the sinkers are moved inwards at such a time as to enable their nebs 2, which are unusually narrow and hook like, to penetrate between the ground and plating yarns prior to the engagement of the needles therewith. When the needles draw loops over the sinkers the ground yarn is drawn to the back of the neb and the plating yarn into the usual throat. To effect reverse plating the sinkers are moved inwards to such an extent that both yarns are drawn to the back of the neb. The penetration takes place as shown in Fig. 6, when the butts 7 arrive on the point 11 of the cam 9. The movement to effect reverse plating takes place in advance of the movement to effect normal plating and for this purpose jacks 13 slidable in the same tricks as the sinkers are selected to move forward and engage companion sinkers and move them to the position shown in Fig. 4. To permit early advance of selected sinkers the cam 8 is cut away at 15. The butts 7 thus moved forward of the cam face 10 are consequently not controlled thereby until they arrive at the point 16. The inclined edges 17 in conjunction with the downward pull of the needles cause the two yarns to assume the proper position for reverse plating at or near the point 16. To separate the yarns sufficiently to allow the nibs to penetrate between them, relatively adjustable guides may be used and the two yarns are fed out of opposite corners of the throat plate. The guide carrying the plating yarn is elevated except when plated or reverse plated fabric is being knitted. The leading portion of the guide is tapered and bevelled to act as a latch opener and closer. Fig. 16 shows an alternative form of sinker. Specifications 20101/09, 256,612, 278,383, 279,813, and 288,256, [all in Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.], are referred to.
