Abstract
474,987. Knitting. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., UPHILL, K. M., and JACKSON, T. May 15, 1936, No. 13811. [Class 74 (ii)] The invention relates to the production of knitted fabrics in which effect threads are laid into the fabric, without being knitted therein, the fabric being produced on a multifeeder circular machine having bearded needles. A row of loops, say 47, is carried by all needles when the first feeder is reached. The laid-in thread 24 is now fed to short butt needles 15, which produce wales 48, the long butt needles 14 lying below the feed level, and all sinkers 17 are advanced, and maintained in such position, to form loops of thread 24 about the shanks of needles 15, the loops lying in the nibs 26 of the sinkers. The long butt needles 14 are now raised to come up on the outside of the thread 24. Needles 15 are now lowered, without pressing, to pull the thread 24 downwardly into the throats 31 of the sinkers. Ground thread 32 is now fed (feeder 2) to needles 14 and loops drawn (wales 49), pressing being effected by a cam, the sinkers being operated in normal manner. Both sets of needles are now raised. Ground thread 38 is now fed (feeder 3) to all needles and all knit. Needles 14 are then raised and laid-in thread 41 is fed (feeder 4), the sinkers being advanced, and maintained in such position, to form loops about needle shanks 14. Needles 15 are then raised on the outside of thread 41. Needles 14 are now lowered, without pressing, to pull the thread 41 into the sinker throats 31. Ground thread 44 is now fed (feeder 5) to needles 15 which are pulled down and pressed, the sinkers being operated in normal manner. At feeder 6, ground thread 38 is fed to all needles which are drawn and pressed to knit and clear old loops. This process is repeated at feeders 7-12. Alternatively, the laid-in thread may be omitted at feeders 7 and 10, or at feeders 1 and 7 or only one may be incorporated out of the twelve feeders. For altering the quality of the fabric, the throw of the sinkers may be varied. The laid-in thread may be a yarn of irregular thickness.
